Male Awareness Project

The Children First Male Awareness Now (MAN) Project was developed as an urgent response to re-socializing males between 10-24 years old from specific communities in Spanish Town with the characteristics of :

  • High levels of low-literacy
  • Lack of employability skills
  • Poverty
  • Substance abuse
  • Violent crime, robberies, extortion
  • Inadequate sexual reproductive health services and
  • Illicit sexual activities

MAN seeks to improve the quality of life of the target group by preparing participants for incoming-earning activities and helping them to improve their self image as men and as contributors to development, through the following programmes:

  • Life skills education
  • Personal and family development training
  • Guidance and Counseling
  • Entrepreneurial and skills training opportunities through the delivery of vocational skills (barbering, photography, videography and information technology)

The initiative “Male Awareness Now (MAN)” submitted by Children First has been selected as one of the finalist in the World Bank 2009 – Commonwealth Secreteriat Regional Caribbean Contest: Keeping Boys out of Risk.
